Introduction

Aims

An explanation.

Operations and rules.

Roots.

Powers of rational numbers.

This unit is the continuation of the unit "Powers and square roots" found in the 'First two years of secondary education' section. This earlier unit dealt with positive whole numbers raised to natural powers (or indices) and focused on the rules governing them. It also offered an introduction to the square root.

This unit, however, deals with numbers raised to both whole and fractional indices and expands the basic rules covered in the earlier unit.

AIMS
  • To understand that a number raised to a power is equal to that number multiplied by itself as many times as indicated by the power.
  • To interpret numbers raised to both whole numbers and fractions.
  • To generalise the rules governing powers in these examples.
  • To understand how the root of an exponent can be used to express a power.
